Swales in a Permaculture design are designed to slow and capture runoff by spreading it horizontally across the landscape in an elevation contour line, hence the use of the A-frame. Our emphasis for this first ever So. Il. tour is educating people about raising chickens and letting people get a feel for what it's like having chickens for neighbors.
