Our First Goji Berry Flowers and a Mexican Sunflower

Posted on | October 11, 2012 | 4 Comments

Planted the gojis last spring. It has been interesting to watch their growth habits. In spring, during the cooler months, they are fully leafed out. Come the very hot months of the summer they lose many of their leaves in response to the heat. I have seen this in the desert when leafy trees lose leaves because of the searing heat of the Sonoran summer. As autumn arrives the gojis become fully leafed out. Now they are flowering in early October. Will have to wait and see when the fruit shows up.

Goji Berry Qu: What did you plant in and any special requirements. Mine are barely 2inch tall and planted late spring in peat pots.
    Cheers

Clive, I planted them straight in the ground. I have a heavily mulched forest garden in the front yard. I got two of them from a student in Ohio and they took well. I had planted a couple of smaller ones before this and they did not make it. They are a Himalayan plant and it seems to me that they prefer cooler weather all the way around but they seem to be doing well here. Where are you located?

Hi. I would like to grow goji berries in Maricopa County. Did you ever get any fruit? Any other recommendations? What variety works best here?

Maricopa county is in northeast Arizona, is it not? What is the climate there? I assume that you are up at around 5000 feet. My goji berries flower in autumn here in Southern Illinois. During the summer, as a protection it sheds its leaves. Remember that it is a Nepalese/Tibetan species so I think that it would love your climate. Send me a bit f=more info and we can take a look at varieties. This is only the third year that they are in the ground and I am not sure when and if they will fruit based in the climate here.
