Permaculture Field Assessment Kit - The first step in working toward a Permaculture design is to go out to a site, observe, take an inventory, and make an assessment of what is already on the ground. This requires rigorous focus and the ability to see deep into the landscape.
This basic field assessment kit helps to extend your senses and affords you the opportunity to acquire the information you need in order to take the next steps in the design process.
For example, the pocket site level is a quick and easy-to-use tool to help you shoot contours (dead-level topographical lines) quickly in order to develop a plan for digging swales, plotting keylines or putting in ponds. It is not all that different from the traditional transit, but in this instance the user becomes the tripod for the transit.
The toolkit comes in a carrying case so that there is easy transport to, from and in the field. So get out there and observe! And use these tools to see deeper into the many secrets of the landscape.
- Pouch: Carrying case
- Soil Moisture meter: Excellent for checking soil water content in different areas of a site
- Soil thermometer: It is important to check soil temperature not only for first plantings in spring, but also to locate important microclimates for early and late crops
- 4-Color Pen: When making an assessment a useful tool for marking varied features by color-coding
- Pencils: An obvious and essential sketching tool
- Field Note Pad: For recording measurements, facts and figures, etc. in the field
- Ph Test Kit: A good place to begin when assessing the soil quality of a site
- Glad Bags: For carrying soil samples, characteristic stones, and any number of items when in the field
- Pocket Site Level: We become the tripod when surveying and take instant readings of the topography of a site that will translate into how we plan for swales, keylines, etc. (a how-to sheet will accompany this tool)
- Scale Rulers: Engineering and architectural three-sided ruler that indicate how to take and make measurements to proper scale. The engineer scale is more applicable to larger scale projects (a how-to sheet will accompany these tools)
- Tape Measure: A 25′ heavy-duty tape measure for taking the countless measurements needed for field assessments and design
- Compass: Let’s us know instantly what our orientation is on a property
- Instructions included
