We are entering our fifth day of the Three Epochs course here at Stelle, Illinois. Some of the activities that have already taken place: bow and hand drill fires, baskets, traps, berry picking, wild edible meals, shelter building, fishing, flintknapping, pottery, primitive tools, cordage. The list goes on. These very full days, the hunter-gatherer segment of the course, have been a joy to participate in, both as a teacher and a doer. Permaculture is all about just this: becoming astutely aware of my immediate environment, becoming cognizant of all that exists in the landscape, gathering the abundance that is right here in front of my face, and taking care to limit my footprint. The students have been overjoyed to learn and play and play and learn. How perfect that we are completely immersed in this place and “seeing” what we are looking at. I cannot think of a better way to begin a certificate course.
