A much neglected and highly nutritious food source, sustenance for so many native tribes around the country, is the acorn. All over our neighborhoods there are abundant resources for the taking. Better then the supermarket, you can walk to it, harvest it fresh, consume it without kowtowing to typical supply lines fraught with long distances and the overuse of fossil fuels. Easily processed and filled with vitamins and minerals, the acorn stands out at the forager’s table. We tend to separate what we grow with what is already growing. Both are sustenance for us. If we, as Permaculture practitioners, expand our purview to take in the “wild” foods all around us, we can augment our yields many fold.
