“The investigation of a specific site is a matter of extracting concepts out of existing sense-data through direct perception. One does not impose, but rather expose the site. The unknown areas of sites can best be explored by artists.” (Robert Smithson) Can we, as designers, become the artist that lifts the veil of the landscape? Can we dive in deeply, explore, assess, delineate, uncover what is already there in essence? Can we learn to read the subtext in the landscape, the ideas already present as a springboard toward conceptualization?
