The next City Council meeting here in Carbondale is on the 19th. The Sustainability Committee meets on the 21st and the discussion around the chicken ordinance begins. From my most recent communications with the mayor and City Council members things are looking good. It looks as though this will come up for a vote within the next two months. It is important that we persevere in our attempts to change policy and law in local government. Local folks are certainly more accessible than those working at a national level. The Permaculture dictum, as well as others, is that we work from the local level, and this will eek its way into the mainstream. This is happening in the local food movement over the past five years. This movement is making big “news”. More and more people are exploring options for personal change and raising food in their backyards and buying local. This really is the only place to act, locally. I will keep you all posted on what goes down in these meetings and let you know the process that it must follow in order to become reality.
